Is there an SEAI grant for a gas boiler?
Short answer: no. Here is the full picture, and what you can actually claim instead.
The straight answer
There is no SEAI grant for replacing a gas boiler, and there has not been one since 1 January 2025. No scheme covers it β not Better Energy Homes, not the Warmer Homes Scheme, not the One Stop Shop.
We would rather tell you that in the first line than keep you reading. Plenty of sites will not, because a vague answer keeps you on the page.
Why it changed
SEAI grants exist to move Irish homes away from fossil fuels, not to make fossil fuel heating cheaper. On 1 January 2025 the remaining support for oil and gas boiler installation was withdrawn across every scheme.
So the rule now is simple. If the work keeps you on gas, it is not funded. That holds whether you are replacing a thirty-year-old boiler with a modern A-rated condensing one or not β efficiency does not come into it. The only heating system the grants will pay towards is a heat pump.
It is worth understanding that distinction before you spend time on application forms. A lot of people ring us having already assumed there is a few hundred euro waiting for them, and there is not.
What you can actually claim
Two of these touch heating. The others are worth knowing about, because the fabric of the house usually matters more to your bills than the boiler does.
| Upgrade | Grant | Relevant to you? |
|---|---|---|
| Heating controls thermostats, timers, zoning, TRVs |
€700 | Yes β this is the one most gas households can use |
| Heat pump replaces your heating entirely |
up to €12,500 | Only if you are coming off gas altogether |
| Insulation attic, cavity, internal, external |
varies by measure and house type |
Not our trade, but often the better spend |
| Solar panels | varies | Separate trade again |
Grant amounts are reviewed and do change. The figures above were correct in October 2026 β always confirm the current amount on seai.ie before you plan around it.
The €700 heating controls grant
This is the one worth knowing about if you are staying on gas, because it is the only grant that improves a gas-heated home's heating directly.
It covers upgrading the controls on your existing system β a proper programmable thermostat, zoning so upstairs and downstairs are separate, and thermostatic valves on the radiators. Better control genuinely does cut what you burn, because most houses are heating rooms nobody is in.
To qualify
- The home must have been built and occupied before 31 December 2010
- The work must be done by an SEAI-registered contractor
- A BER assessment is needed after the work is finished
- You cannot claim it alongside the heat pump grant β a heat pump brings its own controls
The other way to do it
Not everyone wants the grant route. It means a registered contractor, an application, a post-works BER assessment, and a house built before 2011 β and for a home built after 2010 the grant is closed regardless.
There is a full breakdown of the €700 grant here, including the six-item rule that decides whether a job qualifies at all.
We fit heating controls and Hive systems as ordinary paid work: no forms, no BER assessment afterwards, no waiting on an approval, and no restriction on the age of your house. For plenty of people that is simpler, and for a newer house it is the only option on the table.
Before you pay anyone a deposit
Whoever you use for grant work, check them on the SEAI register first. This matters more than people realise: if the contractor is not registered, the grant is not paid. Not reduced β refused. The quality of the work makes no difference to that, and it cannot be fixed afterwards.
Ask for the registration, then look it up yourself rather than taking it on trust.
So what should I do if my boiler has died?
This is the question underneath the grant question for most people who ring us, so here is how we would think about it.
Staying on gas
There is no grant, so it is a straightforward job priced on its merits. A new A-rated condensing boiler will still cut your gas use against an old one β just from efficiency rather than from a grant.
Thinking about a heat pump
The grant is substantial, but a heat pump suits a well-insulated house and usually wants bigger radiators and good airtightness. In a draughty older house it can disappoint badly.
We fit gas, so we are not impartial about that choice and we will not pretend otherwise. What we will do is tell you honestly if we think your house is a poor candidate for what you are asking for. That has cost us jobs and we would still rather do it that way.
One thing worth checking first
If your boiler is still running but struggling, it may not need replacing at all. A €110 service or an €80 call-out settles that question for a fraction of the cost, and we will tell you straight if the boiler is worth keeping. We generally reckon a boiler is worth repairing until it is fifteen to twenty years old.
