Combi boilers explained
An honest look at what a combi boiler is, what it does well, and where it can fall short β so you can decide what suits your home.
What is a combi boiler?
A combi boiler (short for "combination boiler") is a compact, all-in-one system that provides both central heating and hot water directly from the boiler, without the need for a separate water tank or cylinder.
π Advantages
- Space efficiency β it is ideal for smaller homes or properties with limited space
- Hot water on demand β you get hot water on demand, so no waiting for a tank to heat up
- Efficiency β combi boilers are generally more efficient than older traditional systems
- Simpler installation β fewer components mean a quicker and often more affordable installation process
π Disadvantages
- Pressure dependency β run off the mains they depend on your mains pressure, so if yours is low, performance can suffer. There is a way around this (see below), but it adds cost
- Limited simultaneous use β if multiple taps or showers are in use at the same time, a combi boiler may struggle to keep up
- No backup β if the boiler breaks down, you do not have stored hot water to fall back on
What if your mains pressure is not great?
A combi does not have to run off the mains. It can also be fed from your attic storage tank through a booster pump, and that will generally give you better pressure than the mains would on its own.
It is worth knowing the trade-offs before you go down that road:
π In its favour
- Better water pressure than a poor mains supply
- Lets you fit a combi in a house where the mains alone would disappoint
- Keeps the space saving of a combi β no hot water cylinder needed
π The trade-offs
- More expensive β the pump is an extra cost on top of the boiler and the installation
- Pumps are noisy β you will hear it running, and where it sits in the house matters
- Another moving part that can fail and need replacing in time
Our honest view
A booster pump is a perfectly good solution and we fit them where they make sense. But it is worth deciding with your eyes open β if noise would bother you, or the extra cost tips the balance, a system or conventional boiler may suit you better. We will talk it through properly before you commit either way.
Is a combi boiler right for your home?
Larger homes with multiple bathrooms might be better off with a system or conventional boiler setup. Low mains pressure on its own is not necessarily a dealbreaker, given the pump option above β but it does need thinking about.
Before deciding, it is worth assessing your home's layout, your household's water usage, and your existing setup. That is exactly what we look at during a free assessment β and we will tell you straight if a combi is not the best fit.
Prefer stored hot water?
If a system or conventional boiler suits you better, you will need a hot water cylinder. See our guide to hot water cylinders.
